When I was a young aspiring composer, I remember feeling an immense pressure every time I sat down at the piano to create music. I wanted to make something that was really good and constantly compared my work to that of other musicians I admired. I felt like I could never reach their level of skill, which caused me a lot of frustration.
However, over time, I learned to better manage the pressure and anxiety I experienced in my musical career. I learned that constant comparison and pressure to create something impressive all the time are emotions that can be very destructive to any artist or creative person.
I learned to focus on the learning process and on enjoying music, rather than worrying so much about the end result. I began to celebrate my small achievements and to be patient with myself in the process of creating music.
Over time, I started to find my own voice and style in music. I discovered that music is a form of personal expression and that every musician has something unique to offer the world. Instead of comparing myself to others, I dedicated myself to exploring different musical genres and styles and finding my own path in the industry.
I began to face the challenges in music composition with a more positive attitude. I understood that failure is part of the creative process and that every mistake is an opportunity to learn and improve.
Today, I can say that music is a constant source of joy and inspiration in my life. Although I still face challenges and moments of frustration in my musical career, I have learned to handle those emotions more effectively and to find satisfaction in the process of creation and in the connection that I can create with my audience through my music.
Here are my 10 key tips for young aspiring composers who may also be going through this stage of frustration:
1. Listen to a lot of music and experiment with different genres to find your preferences.
2. Practice constantly and do so creatively, you don't always have to be composing, you can also improvise.
3. Participate in music composition contests to showcase your work and receive feedback.
4. Learn from other composers and musicians you admire, but don't try to imitate their style. Find your own voice and style.
5. Be authentic and sincere in your music composition. Don't try to please others, create what truly excites you.
6. Collaborate with other musicians: collaborating with other musicians will allow you to learn new techniques and styles, as well as help you create connections in the industry.
7. Maintain a positive attitude and don't be discouraged by challenges. Remember that failure is part of the creative process and an opportunity to learn and grow.
8. Be patient: composition is a process that requires time and practice. Be patient with yourself and with the creation process.
9. Learn to trust your instincts and creativity. Self-confidence will help you make bolder decisions and find your own style.
10. Enjoy the process of musical creation and don't obsess too much about the end result. Find joy and satisfaction in composing and experimenting with music.
I hope these tips are useful on your journey as a composer. Remember that music is a form of personal expression and that every musician has something unique to offer to the world.
Best of luck in your musical career!
